The film evokes comparisons to "Spaghetti Westerns," as well as “Brusesploitation” and Hong Kong action movies—though, admittedly, there’s likely a more fitting term for that last category. Those films are generally enjoyable, possessing qualities like coolness, excitement, intense action, bloodshed, brutality, cynicism, and everything desirable in cinema outside of mainstream Hollywood productions. *Buffalo Boys*, however, falls short when it comes to sheer enjoyment. Occasionally, there’s a brief standout moment, but that's all there is. The narrative doesn't achieve the depth typical of Western stories, and the action sequences aren't as thrilling as one might anticipate from a Hong Kong film. Essentially, it never pushes boundaries enough with its action to be truly memorable, nor does it fully embrace the nihilistic style associated with new wave Westerns to resonate deeply. It seems to play things cautiously, and when it delivers those surprising moments, they feel familiar—things we’ve seen before in both genres, but without the charm of being a recognizable trope.
