Upon release from prison, Billy (Vincent Gallo) pledges to introduce his new wife to his mother—a commitment made impulsively due to a couple of factors. Initially, he doesn't have a wife, and secondly, he urgently needs to find a restroom. While dealing with this immediate need, he meets Layla (Christina Ricci), whom he believes can also resolve his marital predicament; consequently, he essentially forces her into her car, hoping she’ll cooperate under duress. It’s certainly a gamble! The ensuing events unfold as an amusingly peculiar road movie where the pair slowly develop a connection while glimpses are offered into their respective difficult histories. His intentions aren't solely focused on seeing his mother (Angelica Huston); he also has unfinished business with a bookie (Mickey Rourke), but perhaps his new travel partner will influence what’s most important to him. The film moves along at a comfortable pace, maintaining an intimate feel, and there's a strong rapport between Gallo and Ricci. The narrative is vibrant and captivating, presenting an unconventional romance that, while possibly somewhat foreseeable, relies more on the strength of the two lead actors' portrayals than on contrived emotional moments or overly sentimental scenes as they pursue their own form of resolution.
