It wouldn't have worked as a movie regardless of the characters’ sexual orientations. Billy Eichner isn’t someone I found myself enjoying, whether he was playing a role or just being himself, and the plot unfolded in a completely foreseeable way. Furthermore, describing it as the initial romantic comedy featuring gay characters is simply untrue; films like The Birdcage existed previously. The movie is easily overlooked and felt overly didactic. If you’re looking for a romantic comedy with male leads who are gay, I suggest watching The Birdcage instead.
