It portrays an everyday woman’s challenges that feel relatable to many people. This is a really captivating film. It comes across as a genuine drama, quite distinct from the other movies competing for Oscars this year. Adapted from the novel of the same name, it recounts the story of Eilis, a young Irish woman in the 1950s who travels to Brooklyn, United States, hoping for a better life. Across thousands of miles, she secures employment, makes new acquaintances, and builds an entirely new existence; however, what she longs for is her family and home. The film then follows how she navigates those obstacles and discovers a path forward. It’s about an ordinary woman's life struggle that resonates with most of us. That's why I connected with this movie more than the other drama films nominated for the Oscar. The initial two sections were wonderful; the third felt somewhat predictable and formulaic, but it ultimately circles back to a satisfying resolution. It seems like Saoirse Ronan has truly blossomed into an adult performer. I’ve been a fan of hers since she was a child actress, so seeing her in this role was surprising because that's not how I picture her; however, it only gets better as she takes on roles like this. She delivered a fantastic performance, and I believe she deserves to win the Oscar for this part. In my estimation, Brie Larson’s work in 'Room' and Ronan are the leading possibilities, but if Cate Blanchett wins, that would be upsetting. I also anticipate recognition for the adapted screenplay. The cinematography was superb; it really recreated 1950s New York City on screen. It's definitely worth seeing, particularly if you’re a man of a certain age, because you have a good understanding of personal and social dynamics, and this film simply serves as a reminder. 9/10
