The movie begins with a rather unsettling commentary on contemporary life. There's a church in Busan that has a box for people to leave unwanted children, complete with a toy and music—it felt odd imagining a mother actually bringing a child there to be cared for. That’s precisely what "Moon So-young" (played by Ji-eun Lee) does, and soon after, part-time employee "Dong-soo" (Gang Dong-won) erases the video footage and takes the baby to his friend "Ha Sang-hyun" (Some Kang-ho), who runs a laundry. Initially, it seems like they’re going to care for the child, but it quickly becomes clear that they have more business-oriented intentions. Those plans appear to be falling apart when the mother returns, having spent the night reflecting on her decision, and the church can't find any sign of the baby. The two men decide it’s best to explain what happened—and hope she accepts their explanation that they were acting in the child’s best interest. Meanwhile, police officers are following the mother and the pair, suspecting child trafficking. A separate murder at a nearby hotel adds another layer, creating a fast-paced and humorous crime drama with well-developed characters – both among the adults and through "Hae-jin" (Seung-soo Im), the clever and watchful young orphan who manages to escape from his institution. As they travel across the country searching for customers, they try to stay ahead of the detectives closing in on them, successfully evading capture—mostly without realizing it—until, well, you can probably figure out how things end up. It's an engaging story that weaves together themes of friendship, loyalty, hope and despair with both humor and emotional impact. Every character has their own background and possesses a certain underlying sense of morality, even when their actions are driven by self-interest; they aren’t simply going to sell the child into exploitative labor! The film prompts some consideration without being overly preachy or moralistic, and there's a great deal of chemistry between the actors who work well together in this unusual road movie. It’s definitely worth seeing.
