Skunk (played by Eloise Laurence, also Lily James) shares a home with her father, Archie (Tim Roth), and older brother on a street that feels like a nightmare suburban neighborhood. The initial scenes depict neighbor Bob (Rory Kinnear) assaulting Rick (Robert Emms) based on suspicions about the young man's character. As the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that Skunk has developed feelings for her attractive schoolteacher, Mr. Kiernan (Cillian Murphy), who also seems to have a connection with Kasia (Zan Marjanovic). The unpleasantness of this close-knit community is amplified by an offensive young bully, highlighting how much harm can result from unchecked lies and the backing they receive from societal beliefs. The story jumps around in time, requiring focus as the different elements connect; however, this allows for a notably strong performance from Laurence, along with some impactful moments from Kinnear and Emms – whose character gains significance throughout the unfolding drama. It's not an enjoyable experience, but despite avoiding excessive visuals, it maintains a brisk tempo as these increasingly unstable characters attempt to discover some sense of calm. Certain plot developments might feel somewhat unrealistic and deliberately designed to increase tension, yet it remains worthwhile for offering a look at a troubled family dynamic where feelings are intense.
