Richard Barthelmess and Lilian Gish deliver strong performances in this tenderly filmed story about an enduring romance. Gish portrays a young woman from London's East End who suffers repeated abuse at the hands of her cruel, fighting father. Barthelmess plays a man recently come from China, hoping to inspire the British toward Buddhist principles. From his shop, he notices this girl and, following one particularly terrible beating by her father, offers her shelter and helps her recover. Unfortunately, prejudice and narrow-mindedness are widespread, and when her father finds out where she’s gone, a sad event occurs. It's a straightforward narrative, skillfully presented by D.W. Griffith with an appealing aesthetic. Donald Crisp appears early on as her abusive father, and his performance occasionally feels over the top—he seems to strain his muscles and exaggerates his scowl—but the story moves along purposefully, showing compassion for the girl, understanding for the man, and a growing sense of deserved punishment for the father.
