This isn’t your typical Western filled with battles between settlers and Native Americans. While there are occasional clashes between the advancing white population and the Apache, at its heart, it's an exploration of the attempts made by both groups to establish a lasting peace. Following a period where stagecoaches couldn’t run and mail delivery was disrupted, a somewhat unassuming James Stewart ("Tom Jeffords") takes it upon himself to seek out a different approach than the ongoing conflicts. He picks up some Apache language and sets off to locate Cochise (Jeff Chandler, who received an Academy Award nomination), their leader. Initially met with doubt, they eventually agree to allow mail transport, and from that point on, the film charts their efforts to solidify this agreement, despite opposition from those who benefit from the conflict, all while "Jeffords" develops a romantic interest in "Sonseeahray" (Debra Paget). It does lean toward sentimentality and glosses over some of the complexities of the historical events, but it remains an absorbing film with a sad yet appropriate ending, impressive visuals, and a respectable screenplay by Albert Maltz, who was previously blacklisted—and is properly acknowledged in the version I watched.
