It's hard to miss the air of triviality surrounding Britney vs Spears. The film highlights concerns like “Britney is no longer a free person. She has no basic human rights. She can't write a check or have a credit card,” but it comes across as an overblown complaint. It’s frustrating, especially considering that Britney herself had no involvement in this documentary and doesn’t appear beyond existing video clips. The film isn't just shallow; its production quality is also lacking. It resembles a stretched-out segment from The E! True Hollywood Story at best, and an unpolished YouTube project with narration like something out of a Wikipedia entry at worst. Britney vs Spears shares flaws with a film like QT8: The First Eight, although that earlier documentary did have some impactful elements and wasn't hesitant to use them; this one relies on interviews with people like a “former assistant” or a “former backup dancer.” One former assistant even claimed that "Britney had a work ethic like no other, but she was never motivated by money"—a statement that’s hard to accept given the financial nature of the conservatorship. One interviewee who might be considered someone who knew her reasonably well is Adnan Ghalib, Britney's ex-boyfriend. Given his reputation as someone who exploited and invaded Britney’s privacy for personal gain, it’s challenging to trust that he ever had her best interests at heart. The filmmakers not only fail to question whether Ghalib had a hidden agenda in pursuing a relationship with Spears, but they even portray him sympathetically. Director Erin Lee Carr notes, "Two years ago I started making a movie about Britney Spears with journalist Jenny Eliscu." Yet, after two years of work, the finished film lacks both the professionalism and the passionate focus you’d expect.
