Perhaps an affiliation with this group warrants consideration. Torrance has recently become the leader of the Toros, a celebrated cheerleading squad. Following an injury to one of their members, the Toros bring in Missy Pantone, a talented gymnast. However, after seeing the Toros’ initial performance, she expresses her disapproval, noting that it appears to be copied from another team, The East Compton Clovers. This revelation creates complications, leading to conflict with the Clovers and forcing the Toros to develop an original routine if they hope to fairly win the American championship. It's a lively movie about cheerleading—certainly, it is; it’s clever, insightful, and quite pleasant. While the film does lose some of its impact toward the end (a bolder conclusion would have been preferable), Bring It On addresses matters of race and class while highlighting the intense rivalry among cheerleader teams. The expected elements of petty conflicts and betrayals are present, as is a predictable romantic subplot, but they work well together, and the energy of the routines makes for very enjoyable viewing. Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Gabrielle Union, and Jesse Bradford are in the cast, and each contributes to the film’s appeal. It had the potential to be even stronger, but Bring It On is a diverting movie about a subject that hadn't previously been explored with this level of energy and thoughtfulness—though later installments would appear. 7/10
