Following the death of their father, seventeen-year-old Andy (Billy Barrett) feels responsible for his blind step-sister Piper (Sora Wong), but acknowledges he’s not old enough to care for her. To avoid separating them, social services arrange for both children to live with Laura (Sally Hawkins), who is grieving the recent loss of her own daughter. While she seems receptive to Piper, Laura shows little interest in Andy, and they are both confused by the presence of Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), a silent boy seemingly living in his own world. As the siblings adjust, it becomes clear that Laura has an intention that doesn’t align with theirs, and when she actively undermines Andy's prospects for legal guardianship, a hidden purpose begins to surface. This horror film is unlike anything I’ve encountered before, primarily because of Hawkins’ performance. She manages to project both reliability and a subtly threatening presence in a fascinating way. Her character really got under my skin as she played her manipulative game, and surprisingly, I became invested in the well-being of these two kids. The direction maintains a palpable sense of tension, set against the backdrop of an isolated farmhouse, and effectively uses the assumption that because this woman has been approved by official channels, she must be safe for children still reeling from discovering their father’s body. It also delivers a conclusion that is largely unforeseen, and the underlying psychology concerning grief and desperation makes for a captivating story. After about twenty minutes in, I suggest trying to watch it with your eyes closed briefly—it can be quite frightening.
