This Western turned out pretty well, even with its shortcomings. A long time ago, Italian Westerns were incredibly popular and helped launch the careers of people like Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone. This film, though, isn't from Italy or America: it’s directed by a Dutch filmmaker, Martin Koolhoven, along with his team, and was filmed in Spain, with Hungarians and Austrians also contributing. Despite this mix of nationalities, a solid Western emerged. The story is the film's strongest asset, successfully employing an epic feel and building suspense gradually (I wonder if others noticed the chapter-like organization and non-linear storytelling—did Tarantino have some influence there?). I won’t give away too much about what happens, but it centers on a young woman trying to escape a fanatical Protestant pastor who is determined to kill her, no matter where they are or what's happening. The film creates an absolutely loathsome and unsettling villain, while also giving the female character strength and qualities that make us root for her. It’s not flawless; there are plot holes, continuity errors, and some unbelievable moments. However, it still manages to entertain. Guy Pearce really stands out as a captivating and despicable antagonist—it's arguably his best performance so far. Dakota Fanning carries the main female role and does a decent job, but I often felt her part wasn’t particularly demanding. Kit Harrington probably has more reason to complain, since his character dies off early on and he doesn’t get much opportunity to showcase his abilities, considering the film runs close to two and a half hours. I think it would have been better if it were about thirty minutes shorter; the editing feels rushed and some scenes should have been cut. The movie is powerful, quite violent, realistic, and not appropriate for teenagers or those who are easily affected, especially animal lovers (as far as I know, no animals were harmed during filming, but there are several intense scenes involving them). The sets and costumes are well-done, even if the film exists in a sort of time warp where it’s hard to place exactly when things take place (somewhere between 1880 and 1910?). The landscapes are also very good, and the music is effectively composed.
