What if Superman had turned out to be evil? That's the idea behind Brightburn. I think the film explores a more grown-up notion than the usual heroic Superman story, and it holds up logically too. A being with extraordinary abilities would likely impose its dominance over those who are less powerful; that’s often how things play out in nature, with predators and prey. Regardless of whether you share my views on evolution, this is a solid horror-science fiction movie. It presents a disturbing twist on the familiar feeling of family life. The innocent, cherished, adopted child becomes overwhelmingly strong and destructively ruthless, to the point that even his parents are afraid of him. It’s the sudden difference between these two worlds that makes the film truly unsettling, aided by a well-constructed ending which emphasizes humanity's potential downfall at the hands of this alien threat. I would give it a rating of 7/10; it's worth seeing.
