The film comes close to greatness, though the final moments fall short slightly. The initial idea is fantastic: combining the buddy cop genre with a _Lord of the Rings_ continuation. One anticipates a fairly funny and straightforward action movie. However, Bright proves surprisingly dark and complex. It explores themes of racial bias, police misconduct, difficult decisions, and learning to rely on people you dislike. Naturally, it also deals with the conflict between good and evil. The Orcs represent nearly any group facing discrimination. This is a smart allegorical device, even if somewhat straightforward. The portrayal of the Elves is more subtle; they are depicted as arrogant and privileged members of the wealthiest tier. Those who felt the elves in _LOTR_ were a bit pretentious will likely enjoy this reversal. Will Smith delivers a strong performance, embodying an older, more jaded character reminiscent of his roles in films like _I Robot_. Joel Edgerton is adequate as the Orc, and Noomi Rapace seems perfectly suited to playing a villainous Elf. Sadly, following intense action sequences expertly handled by Ayer, the conclusion feels like a predictable action movie trope. The story possessed so much more depth within its characters, political commentary, and unusual magical setting. I had hoped for an ending that focused on character development rather than standard, violent confrontations—a pattern seen in many recent DC comic adaptations. Despite these shortcomings, Bright is definitely worth seeing. It doesn't fully achieve all of its ambitions, but it still provides a highly enjoyable buddy-cop adventure. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.
