This film, adapted from Noël Coward’s "Still Life," proves to be a remarkable achievement by David Lean. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard's characters come together in a railway station café, and within ninety minutes, the audience experiences a powerful emotional journey, conveyed through understated and nuanced dialogue. These two very conventional English individuals question their deeply ingrained beliefs about proper conduct and social norms. The film’s strength lies in its straightforward approach; the writing is both touching and delightful, though it may feel somewhat old-fashioned today. Stanley Holloway offers moments of levity throughout this fairly intense story, and Rachmaninoff's music also plays a significant role.
