When her close friend Lilian (Maya Rudolph) gets engaged, Annie (Kristen Wiig) feels it's essential to be her maid of honor. The only issue is that her own life is falling apart; she's involved with a rich man who owns a Porsche, her career isn’t progressing well, and she’s broke. Everyone understands weddings are costly affairs, and with the bachelorette party and other duties she wants to handle, she’ll need to find creative solutions! To complicate things further, she gets stopped by Officer Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd) because of a problem with her brake lights. With that background set, it seems likely we know how the rest of this lengthy romantic comedy will unfold. However, I simply didn't find much of it amusing. There is a brief enjoyable moment involving Annie and Rhodes, but otherwise, it feels like a harsh criticism of the pressures of being best friends, highlighting cattiness and misguided devotion, and also presenting us with a disastrous wedding scenario (with very little involvement from the groom). In fact, if this is what people experience when getting married in Milwaukee, then perhaps Matt Lucas’s “Gil” was onto something. As expected, Melissa McCarthy shines as "Megan," providing some genuinely funny moments, but overall, it feels predictable and relies on familiar tropes with friendships that are ultimately worthless. It's a standard story that I seriously doubt I will remember.
