The film opens with "Brendan" (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) discovering the body of a young woman, identified as "Emily," his girlfriend, in a storm drain. He exists on the fringes of his school's social scene, but alongside his more perceptive and equally isolated friend, "The Brain" (Matt O’Leary), he decides to go undercover within the local drug trade, aiming to locate the elusive “Pin.” Brendan hopes this will provide some answers and perhaps a measure of revenge. During his investigation, he crosses paths with several unsavory individuals from his area—specifically, the physically imposing "Tug" (Noah Fleiss) and the calculating "Laura" (Nora Zehetner)—and sustains a few injuries along the way, but will he manage to reach his protected target? The writing is strong in this drama. The conversations are intricate and move swiftly, particularly when delivered by JGL and the subtle O’Leary. However, the rest of it feels much like a slightly rougher version of "90210." The characters feel underdeveloped, the person controlling events becomes apparent early on, and the ending feels both hurried and disappointing. While the main performance is adequate, as the rather flimsy plot progresses, I simply didn’t find myself invested in this one-person detective operation or concerned about who was doing what to whom—as it relentlessly added another blow to the US teenage education system.
