David Earl portrays "Brian," who resides in a Welsh cottage and enjoys inventing. His creations are as outlandish and impractical as those of “Caractacus Potts” from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." That is, until he attempts to transform an old washing machine into a robot. Surprisingly – likely due to the intervention of a mouse and a powerful storm – this robot springs to life, chooses the name "Charles," and develops a connection with Brian resembling that of a parent and child. Charles, having quickly absorbed information from a dictionary, is eager to see what lies beyond their isolated farm. However, Brian worries about how their neighbors will react, a concern proven valid when the local troublemaker “Eddie” (James Michie) discovers the robot and wants him for his daughters. Consequently, Brian and his parrot-loving friend "Hazel" (Louise Brealey) must save Charles from what could be a very unpleasant outcome. The film feels slow to begin; much of it is presented as conversations between Brian and the camera that often fell flat. While Charles does offer some amusing remarks reminiscent of “out of the mouth of babes,” his initial charm fades, and the story relies on rural stereotypes that didn’t hold my interest for the duration of what felt like far more than 90 minutes. It's an easy enough film to watch, but I would suggest waiting until it airs on TV.
