I first encountered this film around age ten, late at night on HBO—or what I believe was HBO. Before I understood terms like Hentai or Anime, I watched it. Back then, when it aired on USA (as far as I recall), they marketed it as Japanimation, a label that seems either mispronounced or shockingly insensitive now. That’s likely why the term isn't used anymore. "Breeders" feels like a live-action adaptation of many cartoons from that era—essentially nudity combined with scenes of monstrous assault. Adding schoolgirls in sailor uniforms would have made it a perfect example of a problematic Anime stereotype. Still, it has an undeniable 80s feel, and that decade excelled at delivering enjoyable, over-the-top clichés. So you get Anime blended with 80s cheese and elements of a terrible horror film—and the result is surprisingly entertaining. I’m awarding it a full 10 out of 10 stars because it provides entertainment; even though it's objectively a bad movie, I find it quite enjoyable to watch.
