The film offers a beautifully shot look at the life of Simon Cavendish (Andrew Garfield), who dealt with severe polio in his twenties, and his wife Diana’s (Claire Foy) efforts to enhance resources for people with disabilities. Being made by their son Jonathan lends an undeniable – though perhaps idealized – sense of truthfulness to their experiences; it's moving to witness their commitment to one another and their resolve to overcome obstacles. The actors do a commendable job, but the characters themselves feel somewhat underdeveloped; the narrative moves quickly through their lives, preventing a deeper connection with either individual. I wished there had been more displays of intense emotion—the anger, frustration, and despair that surely arose as they navigated difficulties in a time very different from today’s world. A strong supporting cast including Ed Speleers, Stephen Mangen, Tom Hollander, and a brief appearance by Dame Diana Rigg, alongside the usual high-quality production design and a quietly effective score composed by Nitin Sawhney, all contribute to a feeling of sadness that, despite some difficult moments, ultimately conveys a powerful message about empathy, perseverance, and a consideration of decisions—something I appreciated.
