"Breaker Morant" was a film I’d been meaning to get around to watching, and now I'm wondering why it took me so long—though the present-day climate of "The war on terror" does lend it an added layer of relevance. The story is rooted in actual events from the Boer War in South Africa. It centers on three Australian soldiers who face a court martial for killing some South African fighters and a priest. The situation is complicated by Australia’s relatively recent status as a nation, and Britain's concern that Germany might intervene on behalf of the Boers; consequently, these men are put on trial to potentially prevent wider conflict. This film appears on lists of the best war movies ever made (http://www.historynet.com/movies/11719756.html), and I believe it deserved a higher ranking than its 91st place out of 100. It’s also among the greatest courtroom dramas, featuring numerous scenes in that setting while occasionally providing a powerful look at war and what conditions were like for those involved. The writing is exceptional; so many observations about the larger context emerge through subtle conversations. Created before the "War on terror," it unexpectedly complicates our reactions to modern conflicts. It doesn't lean toward either liberal or conservative viewpoints. Events have shifted, and this film challenges us in a way that may not have been anticipated when it was made, particularly considering what happened on September 11th, 2001. The acting is outstanding across the board from a group of well-known Australian performers. It’s moving, humorous, informative, and intellectually engaging—it completely shattered my preconceptions about the quality of scripts and performances in Australian films. It's an all time great movie, earning an Oscar nomination and deserving of even more recognition. Flawless.
