The story unfolds through a courtroom examination, portraying the harsh realities of the Boer War—a conflict between the ruling British and Dutch farmers seeking autonomy. Despite being outmatched militarily, the Boers employed guerilla warfare, leading to fierce battles shown in the film. A military tribunal is assembled with the intention of finding someone to blame for events that transpired. It falls to the relatively new lawyer, Major Thomas, played by Jack Thompson, to try and keep these men from execution. The narrative quickly reveals that the soldiers led by Morant, portrayed by Edward Woodward, were far from innocent, and the film doesn't shy away from depicting the war’s horrors. However, it also exposes the involvement of officers who presented themselves as being refined and proper. Featuring a strong ensemble cast, the movie boasts realistic dialogue, striking visuals showcasing the vastness of South Africa and the simple lives of both farmers and soldiers, and maintains an engaging level of suspense as the fate of the accused hangs in the balance. Director Bruce Beresford successfully keeps viewers invested while also criticizing the colonial attitudes prevalent at that time—not solely among the British. It’s a film I would recommend seeing.
