A genuinely gripping thriller. Jonathan Mostow is in the director’s chair for Breakdown, with Mostow also contributing to the screenplay alongside Sam Montgomery. The cast includes Kurt Russell, J.T. Walsh, M.C. Gainey, Kathleen Quinlan, Rex Linn, Jack Noseworthy and Ritch Brinkley. Basil Poledouris handled the musical score while Douglas Milsome was responsible for the cinematography. The story begins when Jeff Taylor (Russell) experiences vehicle trouble on a lonely Southwestern highway and allows his wife, Amy (Quinlan), to travel with a trucker in search of assistance. When she fails to reappear, Jeff repairs his SUV and pursues the trucker—who insists to law enforcement that he has never encountered Amy... Occasionally, what's needed is a straightforward thriller that excels through its simplicity. Mostow’s film delivers consistent tension; it can feel far-fetched at times, but watching Jeff (Russell is excellent) desperately search for his wife – amidst the vast American desert—makes you want him to succeed. As events unfold, we become aware of despicable individuals surrounding him, and the suspense steadily increases as the outcome remains uncertain. The film doesn’t try to be anything it isn't, and as the stakes escalate incrementally, the exciting conclusion might allow for a moment of relief... 8/10
