_**A cabin in the woods where sexual immorality equals death at the hands of Hansel & Gretel**_ Released in 2011 and directed by Mike Nichols (not the well-known director), "Bread Crumbs" is a slasher film set on remote Long Island. A group of nine people travel to film an adult movie at a rented house deep in the woods. Unfortunately for them, two unusual teenagers and possibly a woodsman are nearby, and the crew begins to be violently attacked one by one. I decided to watch this because it was part of a DVD set containing five other low-budget independent horror films. What's odd is that "Bread Crumbs" doesn’t really fit in with those; it feels like a professionally-made slasher. Some people might not care for it, but it certainly looks like a movie made by professionals. But does that mean it’s any good? I think so, and here's why... While the subject matter of an adult film crew is off-putting (at least to me), it provides a perfect setup for the slasher trope where sexual activity leads to death. Most of the characters are likable enough, although a couple aren’t particularly appealing. Angie, who is past her prime, especially earns the viewer's sympathy (played by Marianne Hagan). Two of them fit the stereotype of sexpots: a typical, empty-headed blonde (Alana Curry) and a voluptuous, equally vacant brunette (Zoe Sloane). The “Hansel and Gretel” characters appear to be around 17 (Henry) and 16 (Patti). Henry is portrayed by Dan Shaked while Patti is played by Amy Crowdis. Patti proves to be an interesting character, and Amy has a distinctive beauty about her. The tone is serious with occasional touches of realistic humor, but the mood quickly turns grim in the second act as suspense builds effectively. You find yourself wondering what the purpose of the attacks is and who will survive. The cinematography includes some impressive visuals, especially towards the end, and the music and soundtrack are appropriate. The film runs 88 minutes and was filmed on Long Island, New York (in Sag Harbor & Southhampton). GRADE: B ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY ***SPOILER ALERT*** (Don't read further if you haven’t seen the movie). Someone who considers themselves a film expert pointed out that the crew could easily overcome the two teens and the woodsman. However, they didn't account for the fact that it was nighttime, the crew was unfamiliar with the area, and they had no weapons. In contrast, those attacking them lived there, knew the surroundings well, and possessed various weapons including bows and arrows, knives, axes, and concealed traps. Also, Henry looked closer to 20 than a teenager, and Patti as well. Then there's the woodsman who was a fully grown adult. Finally, the crew wasn’t certain how many people were responsible for the attacks. Some of their coworkers had been seriously injured or killed, and they were understandably terrified and just trying to survive the night and the following day.
