Ryan Phillippe gives a solid performance in this drama rooted in true events concerning an extraordinary instance of espionage within the United States. O’Neill, a technology expert with ambitions to become an agent, is chosen by Kate Burroughs (Laura Linney) for a distinctive assignment: collaborating with Robert Hanssen (Chris Cooper) to develop improved security measures against cyber threats. Unbeknownst to everyone involved, Hanssen is under suspicion of being a significant double agent. O'Neill’s job becomes attempting to penetrate his boss’s defenses in order to expose him. This proves challenging because Hanssen is exceptionally clever, likely the most astute person within the Bureau. As it's a highly classified operation, he must keep Juliana (Catherine Dhavernas), his wife, in the dark, which predictably creates tension in their marriage, particularly as he starts making headway against someone who enjoys playing games—even with his own colleagues. Given the widespread media coverage of this case, there isn’t much suspense created, and Billy Ray doesn't seem to attempt to invent any. Instead, it functions more like an exploration of character, where Phillippe and Cooper both deliver strong portrayals, complemented by engaging exchanges and subtle expressions of suppressed religious beliefs. Trimming roughly ten minutes might improve it, but once the plot is underway, it’s a fairly well-structured thriller that's worth seeing.
