I had higher hopes for this movie, to be straightforward. The story focuses on "Merida," a princess who’s more like a tomboy, and her mother, “Elinor,” who is trying to mold her into a proper lady. "Fergus," her father, is a little rougher around the edges, but generally the family – plus the two younger twin boys – gets along fine. That changes when the king and queen declare it’s time for their daughter to get engaged, and marry one of three clans' eligible sons. She isn't happy about this at all, so she takes off and finds a witch who agrees to cast a spell to change her mother’s mind... but things go much further than that, and suddenly "Merida" has to deal with the consequences of her impulsive wish, as well as fight off a legendary bear that already took half of the King's leg. The adventure is pleasant enough, but the plot isn’t substantial enough to fill ninety minutes, and even though Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson give some memorable and funny performances, I thought it was just a bit slow-paced. The characters have Scottish accents, but honestly, it could have been set anywhere about anything. Also, the animation quality isn't fantastic; it has a very flat look to it that didn’t seem realistic, especially since much of the film takes place outdoors in a lush and colorful forest. It is still an enjoyable movie for families, one you can safely let children watch without concern. Just another product off the assembly line, really.
