The movie proved to be a fairly respectable effort overall. It’s possible that Pixar's deserved success ended up being a hindrance here, because while Brave was enjoyable, it didn't quite reach the level of films like Toy Story, Up, or Monsters Inc.. This film lands more in the category of "entertaining, acceptable, and cute" rather than among some of the studio’s best achievements. Brave tries to move away from the traditional “Disney Princess” formula where princesses primarily exist to get into predicaments that require male intervention (like Snow White or Belle) or who are willing to make extreme sacrifices for a man's appearance, as seen in The Little Mermaid. For this, Brave deserves credit. However, there was one unfortunate consequence of this shift. I initially thought it might have been my own strange perspective, but everyone I’ve talked about the film with came to the same conclusion, so maybe not... Of course, I don't believe it was deliberate, but I must say that the main character Merida seemed to… have a fondness for her mother. That’s just how the story feels as it unfolds. Aside from this oddity, Billy Connolly, playing Merida’s father King Fergus, is genuinely excellent and stands out as one of the film's strongest points. While the animation didn’t represent a significant advancement compared to recent releases, it was still quite impressive. Perhaps if I had been closer in age to Brave's intended audience, I might have enjoyed it more. It was certainly good, but nothing about the movie particularly ?wowed? me. It managed to reach just above average, and I really would have wanted something more, especially since movies on a big screen usually make a stronger impression. Ultimately, Brave’s biggest flaw is that it's forgettable. Although it provides 93 minutes of entertainment, I can't see myself wanting to watch it again anytime soon. 62%
