This is a moving story set in a Northern English mining town during Margaret Thatcher’s time. Pete Postlethwaite brings a quiet strength to his role as “Danny,” who leads the Grimley Colliery Band—a typical brass band often found connected to mines, similar to how choirs are with Welsh communities. The narrative interweaves the unavoidable closing of the mine with its effects on families and their bonds within this tight-knit area, using the band's practice sessions as a central point for what happens. Tara Fitzgerald, Ewan McGregor, Philip Jackson, and Jim Carter each offer authentic performances in this often understatedly funny group production, and by the film’s conclusion, I was quite acquainted with Rodrigo's "Concerto de Orange Juice."
