The film’s screenplay represents a mixed success as it draws from the book. The romantic storyline clarifies Dracula's intentions and reasons for acting, while also creating a clearer connection between the four men pursuing him, viewed through a XXth century lens. Unnecessary characters are cut out, allowing for a more complete narrative arc. Still, alterations have created some disjointed sections because they weren’t adjusted to match the other changes made. Furthermore, certain moments are difficult to grasp due to an abundance of information that is only briefly mentioned on screen. The costumes and overall artistic design are excellent, but this contributes to a level of extravagance that leads to over-the-top performances from some of the actors. Regardless, I believe it’s a significant film deserving of repeat viewings.
