The scientist Dr. Martin (played by Bill Pullman) spends his days working among jars of preserved brains, until he’s asked to put his theories into practice and assess Halsey (Bud Cort). Halsey was once an important mathematician but now struggles with paranoid schizophrenia. Dr. Martin believes it might be possible through surgery to recover his memories. This prospect excites Reston (Bill Paxton), a corporate colleague, and their boss Vance (George Kennedy), so the project receives approval and unexpectedly succeeds. Immediately after leaving work, carrying one of his usual jars, he’s struck by a car, and upon waking, he notices changes in himself. His personality has shifted; even his wife Dana (Patricia Charbonneau) doesn't recognize him, as those around him believe he's lost his mind entirely. He begins to see a man wearing a blood-soaked white coat and feels certain that he’s being controlled and targeted by some scheme! What is happening? Is this what it appears to be? The final portion of the film does offer some resolution, but for much of its length, it falls flat as sci-fi horror, presenting a story that's predictable and loses momentum rather early on. I don’t think Bill Pullman suits the comedic aspects well, and director Adam Simon’s constant shifts between dream sequences and reality became tiresome and repetitive instead of enjoyable. Perhaps my timing was off – but I had difficulty connecting with it and found it all somewhat unremarkable.
