It was rare for a film this year to generate the kind of suspense that 'Boy State' did. By its conclusion, I found myself reacting with audible gasps, tears, laughter and applause at its boldness, vibrancy, intensity and heartfelt nature. This is documentary filmmaking done exceptionally well, uncovering an extraordinary concept and compelling central figures involved in a narrative that extends far beyond what’s initially presented. Even simply viewing the promotional material again before writing this, I felt my pulse race and my eyes water and my skin tingle just recalling how impactful it was. 'Boys State' is a genuine eye-opener, a major documentary achievement, an exhilarating sequence of unexpected twists and turns, and without question one of the strongest films released this year.
