It feels like you’re not from these parts. This is the kind of movie any serious film enthusiast should experience firsthand to form their own opinion. Celebrated by critics and recognized with awards, it possesses a clear emotional impact. The story draws on the devastating events surrounding Teena Brandon (played by Hilary Swank), who was raped and murdered in 1993—a case that would later be considered a pivotal instance of hate crime in the United States. Right from the beginning, Kimberly Peirce’s film establishes a somber tone, and it delivers on that promise. Moments of hope appear briefly, but the movie remains consistently harsh and difficult to watch. I felt there was something amiss with how the central characters were developed; their reasons often seemed glossed over, which is strange considering the film's nearly two-hour length. Nevertheless, Hilary Swank and Chloë Sevigny both give remarkable performances, and Peirce directs the most disturbing scenes with a sensitivity and skill that’s worthy of praise. Even if shortened, this story required to be shared; *Boys Don't Cry* is well-made cinema. 8/10
