James Rolleston's performance was genuinely enjoyable; his energy is palpable throughout. His character doesn’t even have a name, living with his grandmother and the unforgettable “Rocky” (Te Aho Eketone-Whitu), who possesses supposedly incredible abilities – though they aren’t really there! He’s an original Michael Jackson devotee, and only his father seems to approach that level of fandom. His dad, "Alamein" (Taika Waititi), is temporarily incarcerated, so you can imagine the boy's dismay when his grandmother has to leave for a week for a funeral just as his father and some friends arrive! The young man is completely engrossed and doesn’t realize they aren’t playfully digging in the garden, but rather searching for hidden loot. It’s not really about whether they’ll find it, but who will, and with a hungry goat always nearby, whether it will remain safe! This is an agreeable look at life in rural New Zealand during the mid-1980s, showing a small town with a strong sense of community where everyone – mainly the only woman present (Rachel House) – looks after the kids like “Dallas,” “Dynasty,” and even “Falcon Crest.” She and "Alamein" clash sometimes, especially when he gets increasingly annoyed that he can’t locate his money, but it's all pretty funny. Ultimately, he does care about his son, and as they search together, their relationship strengthens. It unfolds in a surprising yet entertaining way, full of silly, down-to-earth, and clever lines from almost everyone involved. The film also highlights the beauty of their surroundings, but it was the delightful “Rocky,” whose simple gestures can seemingly make things move or bring people back to life, that made me laugh the most. Didn’t we all, as children, believe we possessed some kind of special power? His are shown through childlike animations (drawn on graph paper!), and you'll have to watch to see them. It does lose a bit of momentum, and perhaps the humor wears thin toward the conclusion, but it’s an amusing portrayal of a fractured family dynamic and is worth ninety minutes of your time.
