It’s a skillfully crafted erotic thriller, though lacking in fresh ideas. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It arrived in 1996, a time when films focusing on dramatic storylines combined with explicit sexuality were popular. Perhaps it represents one of the last to achieve some measure of success; I imagine it thrived during the VHS era and made its way to DVD before eventually fading into obscurity. Was that warranted? Possibly not, but it's easy to understand why: while it isn’t a masterpiece, fans of erotic thrillers will likely find it enjoyable. The story centers on two women involved in a lesbian affair who decide to flee with a substantial amount of money connected to the mafia, which implicates the mob boyfriend of one of them. The script itself doesn't offer anything new; its surprises come from the lesbian storyline and the abundance of nudity, as everything else—the violence, the harsh language, the intense dialogue, the quick pacing—is exactly what you’d anticipate in a movie like this. The directors did an outstanding job and their work helped pave the way for "The Matrix" franchise, which brought them widespread recognition before they returned to relative obscurity from which they haven't often managed to escape. They successfully incorporated elements of film noir into the erotic plot, including the visual style and lighting in several scenes, along with impressive sets, costumes, cinematography, and a fitting soundtrack. Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly lead the cast. Neither is considered an exceptional actress; each has had moments of brilliance in smaller roles, and I don’t believe they will ever reach that level. What's interesting here is their dedication to the project and the effort they put into it, even if it doesn't transform them into extraordinary performers. They developed a strong rapport on screen, demonstrating believable chemistry which the film utilizes effectively. Joe Pantoliano delivers a more compelling performance and his presence is worth noting as he interacts with the other actors.
