The film focuses less on the infamous killer himself and more on the experiences of two journalists who carefully tracked the case, attempting to uncover the reality behind these disturbing events. Loretta McLaughlin, portrayed by Keira Knightley, largely spearheaded efforts to convince her editor – played by Chris Cooper – but the thorough and persuasive analysis she presented resulted in criticism from law enforcement and a quick removal from the assignment. Despite this setback, she continued her work, eventually being reinstated with the help of the more seasoned Jean Cole, portrayed by Carrie Coon, allowing them to explore the possibility that there might not be a single perpetrator involved. While I don’t have extensive knowledge about the historical context, I found it to be a rather subdued and methodical drama, somewhat reminiscent of "Official Secrets" (2019). Knightley appears in a similar type of role here as well, delivering her performance with a noticeable lack of emotional depth. The film doesn't fully convey the determination and resilience displayed by these women – moments where they risked their own safety and that of their families – and it feels somewhat lengthy, occasionally overly sincere, and visually polished but ultimately lacking in vitality. It’s an intriguing narrative exploring serial killings, copycat crimes, and dedicated investigative reporting against a backdrop of a straightforward (and sexist) response from the authorities. One would expect it to be captivating and engaging, but unfortunately, that's not what it delivers.
