I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into with this film, but I have to admit it proved to be an enjoyable action experience, even though I typically dislike time travel narratives—this one just clicked for me. The movie essentially unfolds like a first-person shooter game, as the title suggests. It's a cycle of starting, running, shooting, dying, and then restarting. That might sound tedious, but surprisingly it works well. There’s enough change in each run to keep things interesting, and with each repetition, the story progresses and another piece falls into place. Naturally, there is plenty of action here, and it's both good and entertaining. Fortunately, they avoided a watered-down PG-13 or TV-PG rating. This is intended for adult viewers; the language and violence are geared toward grown-ups who aren’t easily shocked. People get hurt, things explode, and bullets leave their mark everywhere. At the same time, it's fun, exaggerated, and occasionally quite comical action. The internal narration from the main character, along with his matter-of-fact yet “I’ve had enough of this” attitude, really enhances the entertainment value. There is a plot beneath all of that, surprisingly enough, and it isn’t terrible. There are definitely some significant gaps in logic—big enough to fit a warship through—but they don't detract from the experience. The story serves its purpose, propelling both the narrative and the action forward, and the film doesn’t pretend to be scientifically accurate or logically sound. It feels like an over-the-top action take on *Groundhog Day*, incorporating elements of a first-person shooter. Frank Grillo does a solid job portraying the weary, violent lead character, and it was nice to see Mel Gibson again, even though he’s cast as one of the antagonists. The other actors are largely forgettable and just as disposable (again and again). It's an entertaining film clearly designed to amuse viewers with outrageous action sequences and some witty dialogue, and it does a pretty good job of achieving that goal.
