Turnip Man and Iceberg Woman. Lady of Deceit (also known as Born to Kill) comes from director Robert Wise, with a screenplay by Eve Greene and Richard Macaulay based on James Gunn’s novel Deadlier than the Male. The cast includes Claire Trevor, Lawrence Tierney, Walter Slezak, Elisha Cook Jr., Audrey Long, Isabel Jewell, and Esther Howard. Paul Sawtell handled the music, while Robert De Grasse was in charge of cinematography. Trevor portrays Helen Brent, a scheming divorcée who jeopardizes her prospects for money and stability by agreeing to marry a man she doesn't care for—the volatile murderer Sam Wild (Tierney)—even though he plans to wed her foster sister. I wouldn’t want your position, even if it meant being cut into pieces. This is a noir film with some heft, putting two of the genre’s most unpleasant personalities in opposition to one another. Tierney's unstable masculinity and Trevor’s manipulative allure clash in an unsettling romance that seems destined for disaster as their individual desires for recognition surface. Anyone caught under her influence will require divine intervention. The story can be difficult to accept, but when immersed in a noir setting, it occasionally helps to pause for refreshment at a surreal establishment. It's a dark narrative about people with serious issues, and Wise’s direction is excellent, marking his first venture into traditional film noir. Slezak contributes a shady atmosphere as a bible-reciting private investigator, Cook Jr. performs exactly what he does well, and Jewell embodies innocent, alluring charm. There's intense violence and passionate madness lurking in the darkness. Wonderful! 8/10
