Yibo Wang portrays Lei Yu, an ambitious test pilot chosen for a program designed to enhance the Chinese Air Force’s jet fighter capabilities. The story follows his journey as he contends with competition from Deng Fang (Yosh Yu) and guidance from their commander Zhang (Jun Hu), all of which pushes both him and his equipment to their limits—but will he be able to meet them? It shares some visual similarities with "Maverick" (2022), featuring striking aerial photography and intense dogfight sequences, and attempts to incorporate elements of engineering and science into the narrative by suggesting that these airmen possess abilities extending far beyond simply piloting an aircraft. However, the filmmakers were unable to avoid overt political messaging that excessively praises their Air Force while depicting an unspecified (English-speaking) enemy as a constant threat. By the film's midpoint, I found myself feeling sympathetic toward Lei Yu; describing him as accident-prone would be a significant understatement, so his survival alone is quite astonishing! There’s a subtle romantic subplot involving his doctor Shen Tianran (Dongyu Zhou), but ultimately, the focus remains on a young man’s drive to achieve success. It's an enjoyable film with respectable production values; if it had avoided the nationalistic displays, it could have been another example of well-crafted action cinema. At times, though, it feels overly much like a political pep rally, and that ultimately detracts from its overall quality.
