I don’t have much experience with Indonesian films, so I decided to try Borderless Fog. This movie is uneven in quality. A friend who lived in Indonesia once told me it was among the most perilous places he'd encountered. Consequently, the idea of a woman—or even a man—arriving from urban life into the countryside of Indonesia to pursue a serial killer who decapitates victims deep within the jungle feels unrealistic. The main character’s believability isn’t improved by her wardrobe; she looks like someone plucked from Miami Vice while trekking alone through dense, shadowy jungle. However, the characters, even that woman with the 1980s style, become more appealing as the story progresses. They aren't typical, shallow figures. I also appreciated the pervasive feeling of unease and suspense woven into the jungle environment, along with the strange and disturbing nature of the crimes. Overall, it’s a decent crime thriller from Indonesia, though not particularly outstanding. The ending is stronger than the beginning, so some perseverance is required. It's definitely worth watching.
