This film ranks among the worst I've ever encountered. Before diving in, let me state that I’m unfamiliar with the Borderlands video games—I haven’t played any of them and have no preconceived notions about the franchise. However, I approached this movie cautiously, given Eli Roth's history with adapting other properties hasn't always been positive. Right from the beginning, Borderlands feels like a transparent imitation of Guardians of the Galaxy. The similarities are obvious, but Roth seems to have missed what made Guardians so enjoyable. It’s only missing a dance-off scene before becoming a near carbon copy, and even if he had included one, I suspect he would have cast an Australian breakdancer from the Olympics—a bizarre choice that perfectly illustrates how misguided this film is. The movie assaults viewers with a series of illogical plot developments that don't make sense or serve any clear purpose. The story constantly changes direction, but never in a way that feels natural or significant. Without a solid narrative foundation, it’s hard to become engaged, and the film quickly becomes dull. Another major problem is the movie's inability to establish any real connection between the main characters. In Guardians of the Galaxy, the rapport among the team members is essential, making their adventures both thrilling and emotionally satisfying. Borderlands completely fails to achieve this. The characters are underdeveloped, with little depth, and their interactions lack the energy needed for audiences to invest in their story. Visually, the film also falls short. The design choices, from the sets to the special effects, don’t create a world that's interesting or believable. The attempt to capture the wild, chaotic feel of the Borderlands universe doesn’t work, resulting in a lifeless and uninspired visual presentation. Ultimately, Borderlands is an incredibly tedious movie, lacking character development, a logical plot, or any visual flair. It not only fails to do justice to its source material but also struggles to be entertaining on its own merits. Eli Roth's attempt to recreate the success of Guardians of the Galaxy was poorly conceived and ultimately unsuccessful, leading to a forgettable and disappointing experience. This movie highlights that simply copying successful approaches without understanding what makes them effective is a sure path to failure.
