Following an accident involving a toaster that landed her mother in the hospital, a young girl called Mildred (Nell Fisher) unexpectedly finds herself in the care of her father—a man she’s never met. His arrival is less than impressive; Strawn Wise (Elijah Wood), dressed in mysterious clothing and working as a magician, doesn't quite live up to her expectations, given her rather skeptical nature. He seems eager to make a good impression, so when Mildred proposes they go camping to search for a legendary black panther reportedly roaming the area, he happily complies. Equipped with backpacks and a camera, they embark on a journey that predictably, yet entertainingly, leads to their relationship developing. The film features music reminiscent of Morricone’s scores, introduces Arnold (Michael Smiley) and Zo (Morgana O'Reilly), who are unsettlingly like leprechauns, and offers plenty of adventure as they hunt for evidence of the elusive big cat—and a $50,000 reward. There’s a genuine connection between Fisher and Wood; the script allows Mildred to deliver some sharp, sarcastic remarks, while Wood seems genuinely happy to be back in New Zealand, free from “Orcs.” The cinematography showcases the beautiful landscape, and the overall story evokes the spirit of the Children's Film Foundation. It’s refreshing to see a film prioritize the writing and characters above all else, and with its complete lack of CGI and abundance of mushrooms, it provides a genuinely enjoyable experience. One does wonder, however, how she managed to get her legs tangled beneath that enormous tree in the first place.
