Maren (Taylor Russell) slips out to see her friends one evening, but things take an odd turn when one of them realizes she has a strange craving—and it’s not what you might think! She's then compelled to leave with her father, who leaves her on her own, and she sets off to find her mother. After several bus rides, she meets the mysterious Sully (Sir Mark Rylance), sharing a meal with him and learning more about herself in the process. However, he makes her uneasy, so she continues alone until she runs into Lee (Timothée Chalamet) after a disagreement at a grocery store. He has the same unusual needs as well, and they begin to connect. He assists her search for family before an unforeseen arrival disrupts their plans. Sometimes, this feels like just another road movie we've seen before. The characters all feel somewhat artificial, and the plot isn’t particularly fresh—though Sir Mark delivers a uniquely unsettling performance, appearing completely at ease as if he belonged on a mountainside, and Russell does a decent job portraying a young woman struggling to balance her instincts with what she wants to become. Chalamet gives one of his most grounded and appealing performances, even though he spends much of the film without a shirt on—a detail that makes me want to shove a plate of fries in front of him (in fact, the title might have been more fitting for just him!). There’s a lot of talking, perhaps too much, but there are complex themes about identity and belonging, particularly among young Americans. The film features some beautiful cinematography and portrays the growing connection between the two leads without resorting to overly sweet sentimentality before reaching an ending that felt abruptly harsh. I have a feeling this one might reveal more on a second watch.
