While investigating the death of a resident and the abduction of three others, Sheriff “Hunt” (Kurt Russell) finds a piece of bone used as a weapon. This leads him to suspect that a group of troglodyte natives living in remote caves are responsible. Puzzled by their unusual appearance in "Bright Hope," he gathers a team consisting of the injured husband of one of the missing women (Patrick Wilson), his weary deputy “Chicory” (Richard Jenkins), and solitary gunslinger “Brooder” (Matthew Fox) to attempt a rescue. The group was given warnings about these warriors, and they quickly discover that their weapons are just as dangerous as firearms and that they show no mercy based on age or gender. As the story unfolds, the reason for their anger becomes clear, but with the rescuers severely outnumbered, outmatched in skill, and completely fooled, it seems likely they will share the same grim end as those already captured. I initially thought Russell seemed too mild for such a harsh role, though he performs admirably once the action shifts to the desert and encounters these sparsely clothed survivors from prehistoric times. The violence feels immediate and is sometimes quite graphic; the suspenseful direction creates a genuine feeling of dread for this unprepared group. Wilson also delivers a strong performance as he pushes his determined character, “Arthur,” across this harsh landscape, desperately trying to save his wife from a truly horrifying situation. Though classified as a western, it incorporates horror elements that are genuinely gruesome over its two-hour runtime, and despite being difficult to watch, the experience is worthwhile.
