This movie was dreadful. There were so many things about it that I found unpleasant, objectionable, and even physically repulsive, that I feel a little foolish for eagerly anticipating the chance to watch Bone Tomahawk in peace. It’s an exceptionally bad film—painfully slow, more boring than frightening—and includes a scene of a man being scalped, strangled, and bisected from his groin up. I honestly think the water buffalo in Apocalypse Now had a better time. It brought to mind John McTiernan's The Thirteenth Warrior (with a hint of Quest for Fire). In that film, an Arab diplomat joins forces with Beowulf and his companions. Blood is abundant as the "Geats" battle a tribe of spider-worshipping Neanderthal creatures. Here, a small group of Southwesterners from the 1890s embark on a rescue mission into desert territory controlled by a band of “Troglodytes.” While McTiernan moves the story forward with relentless speed, Bone Tomahawk focuses on breaking bones, removing scalps and genitals, and making it difficult to connect with any of the characters. Kurt Russell, whose voice is as rough as his gaze is steely, seems so subdued that the intensity he brought to Tombstone is nearly extinguished. I believe the filmmakers attempted to portray the protagonists as imperfect and realistic, but I grew weary of their endless trek across the Southwestern wilderness accompanied by archaic dialogue. As I write this, my opinion about the characters’ lack of personality is starting to shift. Perhaps they are, in a way, working-class heroes, but I was hoping for more brutality from the “good guys.” I'm going to submit this review now and pray that my wife hasn’t made spaghetti for dinner.
