This Southwest Western from the late 1890s follows a sheriff, portrayed by Kurt Russell, accompanied by his elderly deputy (Richard Jenkins), a gunman (Matthew Fox), and an injured cowboy foreman (Patrick Wilson) on a mission to recover captives taken by an unknown tribe located far away. Lili Simmons appears as the cattleman’s wife, while David Arquette takes on the role of a disreputable outlaw. Sid Haig has a brief appearance early in the film. “Bone Tomahawk,” released in 2015, assembled an impressive cast for an independent Western produced with just $1.8 million and filmed over 21 days. It marked S. Craig Zahler’s directorial debut, demonstrating his skill as a filmmaker by creating a strong movie despite the limited resources. The film isn't rushed; it allows time to develop characters and includes engaging everyday conversations, which brings to mind Tarantino films. While moments of violence do occur, this is primarily a deliberate Western that develops into a satisfying resolution. The picture stands out for its combination of elements seen in movies like “The Homesman” and “Cry Blood, Apache,” as well as the dialogue style of Quentin Tarantino. It's better than both of those films, particularly "Cry Blood," though it doesn’t quite reach Tarantino’s level because of budgetary constraints—though it comes remarkably close. With a runtime of 2 hours and 12 minutes, filming took place at Paramount Ranch in Agoura, California. GRADE: B+/A-
