I recently watched three Westerns one after another: 'The Salvation', 'The Homesman,' and this film. They were all quite distinct from each other, and I found them all to be enjoyable. I wasn’t familiar with the title's meaning beforehand, but I looked it up and discovered it refers to a type of axe used by American Indians. So, I was anticipating that moment throughout the movie, and then, wow, I was really taken aback; watching that scene was deeply unsettling. It felt like a Western version of 'The Hills Have Eyes.' Essentially, this is a road movie about a group attempting to rescue people who had been kidnapped by mountain tribes. The rescue itself happens in the third act, and most of the film focuses on their journey to reach that isolated area. There's a deliberate slow pace, which allows you to relax while watching, but after about 90 minutes, you’ll likely be more engaged as the story becomes increasingly tense. The kind of action typical of Western films finally appears. It was straightforward, yet powerful and disturbing. The performances were definitely a highlight; everyone seemed to give it their all. The music and locations also worked very well. It's one of the few Westerns I’ve seen that incorporates elements of horror and terror. Considering this film was made on a limited budget and shot in just a month, it’s remarkably well-produced and completely unexpected. A sequel is possible, but I don't think it would be worthwhile unless they kept the same team involved. If you don't mind a slower pace, then you should like it. The ending provides a sense of satisfaction compared to how things started. It might not be considered among the greatest Westerns ever made, but it’s still worth seeing. 7/10
