It’s certain to spark debate... S. Craig Zahler wrote and directed Bone Tomahawk, which features Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Richard Jenkins, and Lili Simmons. The music is by Zahler and Jeff Herriott, and the cinematography is by Benji Bakshi. The horror western hybrid is a tricky thing to pull off successfully, especially when trying to attract people who aren’t already fans of either genre! It's a hard sell; this film has a striking originality, but it also feels like something made for a small group of dedicated movie buffs—a group perhaps similar to the Troglodyte tribe that drives the horror elements of the story. The story takes place in the Old West, and after a series of events leads to three people being abducted from the local jail by members of the Troglodyte tribe, four men embark on a rescue mission. It’s wonderful to see a narrative that acknowledges one of the most respected westerns ever made while still standing apart as its own creation. Bone Tomahawk will definitely divide audiences; the middle section is essentially a travelogue driven by character development and necessary setup for what happens in the final third. However, dismissing the lengthy portion featuring the four men as simply slow cinema would be inaccurate, because there’s dark humor present—like a racist horse? It's hard to believe! The screenplay isn't just clever; it also has real dramatic power, arising from human stubbornness. Whether it's men who understand that they might die with honor due to errors or poor decisions, or simply seeking redemption, this mission seems foolish on the surface but involves more than meets the eye. That’s when the horror arrives—the characters are well-developed; we know them and care about their fates. Like or dislike is beside the point; we're familiar with them, so as the film moves into its most intense moments, shouting at the screen or reacting in discomfort becomes almost necessary. As does squirming... With careful pacing, gorgeous visuals, and excellent performances from a cast that doesn’t seem to care about fame or recognition, Bone Tomahawk is a top-tier cult movie. Zahler is someone worth watching. 9/10
