The story begins in a fun way, featuring "Penny" and her superhero dog "Bolt," who must stop the villainous schemes of "Dr. Calico." She rides around on what amounts to a souped-up scooter while he runs alongside – but they don’t let the immense opposition they face prevent them from reaching the airport. That's when it becomes apparent that this is a TV program, and there will be another episode tomorrow—or maybe not. A representative named "Mindy" from the network informs the rather particular director that viewers are growing tired of predictable television plots, so he needs to inject some suspense or risk cancellation. The subsequent effort to refresh the series leads to "Bolt" believing his friend has actually been taken and finding himself in a container filled with polystyrene packing material, transported many miles away to NYC. Will he manage to return before she’s harmed by their adversary? During his journey, he encounters “Mittens,” and they experience several adventures as he attempts to get home. It's an agreeable family adventure film, but like the television series it is derived from, it's completely unoriginal and predictable. There are numerous action sequences before a final scene that only serves to highlight its lack of inventiveness. The younger viewers will likely find it enjoyable, but I suspect unless you’re an adult who loves pets—particularly dogs—you might have difficulty recalling this story afterward.
