I’m honestly unsure what I anticipated going in, but this underdeveloped adaptation of "Grand Hotel"—the TV series, as opposed to the well-regarded 1932 film—definitely didn't meet those expectations. It has surprisingly little connection to the politician mentioned in the title, instead focusing on individuals linked to his early campaign efforts or the Ambassador hotel in Los Angeles. The one consistent element is its general manager, John Casey (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins), who’s spent years interacting with prominent figures and is currently spending time with his friend "Nelson" (Harry Belafonte), awaiting Senator Kennedy's arrival. Then there's "Ebbers" (William H. Macy) recently involved in a disagreement with his catering manager, “Simmons” (Christian Slater); a persistent Czech journalist insisting she isn’t from a communist regime; two men eager to connect with Ashton Kutcher and partake in some marijuana use; and some kitchen staff—understandably anxious—about potential job losses. There are also a few predictable romantic entanglements exploring who is having an affair with whom, all interwoven with actual footage of the political events unfolding that night, seemingly intended to add significance. Unfortunately, despite its impressive cast, the series doesn’t really come together in a way that's engaging. It feels like Emilio Estevez set out to involve as many friends and family members (and their connections) as possible in what seems like a Democratic fundraising project, incorporating some inspiring speeches from historical records. The script is overly dense, the pacing is sluggish, and there are too many diversions to make it truly captivating. Shia LaBeouf seemed to be having fun with his role as the hallucinatory "Cooper," but otherwise, this leans toward being sincere and, frankly, rather boring. Maybe if it had been titled “Bobby’s Hotel,” I wouldn't have felt so let down, but it wasn't, and I did.
