One frequent goal for a movie biography, beyond simply recounting someone's life, is to offer some understanding of the person’s personality and essence. This film about reggae legend Bob Marley (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir), however, doesn’t quite succeed in that area. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biographical account of the celebrated musician and advocate for peace presents a rather disjointed and fragmented view of his life, mainly concentrating on the final years while incorporating flashbacks that feel largely unexplained and not particularly revealing or illuminating. The movie does have some strengths; it includes a good selection of Marley's songs, showing how many of them were created, and Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch, as his wife Rita, both deliver strong performances. Still, I didn’t leave feeling like I understood the subject much better than before, especially since several storylines are introduced but never fully explored. The film's audio quality (outside of the musical numbers) was also a problem; it frequently required considerable effort to hear and understand what was being said. “One Love” ultimately feels like a wasted chance to tell the story of someone who had so much to communicate, yet whose message isn’t conveyed nearly as effectively as it could have been. It would be more rewarding to simply listen to Marley's music—you’ll likely gain more from one of his albums than you will from watching this film.
